Making Choices

Day 8

Daily Principle:

Level 1.      We do things in different ways.

Level 2.      We choose what to do and how to do it (or we choose what we want and how to get it).

Level 3.      We choose goals and plans.

Rationale:

When there is something that we want, or something that we want to do, it is important to make goals and plans.

Daily Activities

Opening  Key Points

Materials:             Butcher paper and markers.

Introduction:        Review the unit and introduce the Daily Principle. State that today you want to find out what the children want to sing (their goal).

Introduce principle.

Activity:                 Model reflective thinking as you say that you think the best way to know what they want to sing is to ask them.  Ask each child what song they want to sing and write the title down on the butcher paper.  Now, emphasize that what you want (your goal) is to find out which of these songs most children want to sing.  Again, model reflective thinking as you say that one of the best ways to find out what most people want is to take a vote.  Help the students vote for the song they want to sing.  Sing the song, then review your goal and your plan. State that you had a goal, to sing what the children wanted to sing, and you made a plan to meet the goal, taking a vote.

Have children choose songs they want to sing, make a list, and have children vote for their favorite.

Summary:             Tell the students they can think about what they want and figure out how to get what they want.

Discuss how children have the ability to choose goals and ways to reach those things they want.  Summarize activity and provide rationale.
