Strategy Group  Key Points

Principle:              We choose who to do things with.

Title:                      One inch cubes.

Materials:             Levels 1, 2, 3.  One-inch cubes.

Direction:             Review today's principle.  Introduce today's activity by stating that children will pick partners to build with.

Review principle.

Model:                    Tell students to think about who they can get along with and work with to help them decide who to choose as a partner.

Activity:                 Allow children to pick a partner when they are ready.  If someone picks someone that does not want to be chosen by that person, help them to problem solve this situation.  When children are paired up they can simply build together or take turns building a model for the other child to copy.  Encourage them to share strategies. Point out that they were able to choose partners and emphasize all the choices they make as they work together; they choose to talk to their partner, they choose to get along, they choose which color block to use next and they choose where to put the block.  Help students to evaluate their choices.

Have children pick partners and build together, making choices along the way.

Evaluation:            Level 1.         What is this?
                      What did we just do?
Level 2.         How did you do that?
Level 3.         What will you do different next time?
What will you do the same next time?
                      Why?

Assist children in evaluating this activity and their strategies.

Summary:

Summarize activity and provide rationale.
