Daily Principle:

      Level 1.      We choose our friends.

      Level 2.      We choose how to play with our friends.

      Level 3.      We choose who to do things with.

Rationale:

We choose people that we get along with to have fun.  We can learn new things and make new friends by choosing someone new to play with.

Opening  Key Points

Title:                      Book.

Materials:             A Letter To Amy by Ezra Jack Keats .

Introduction:        Review the unit and introduce today's Daily Principle and activity.

Introduce principle.

Activity:                 Introduce today's story and state that children usually choose their friends, choose who they want to play with.  Discuss that in this story Peter is choosing to send a letter to Amy .  Read the story.

Read story.

Summary:             Help children to discuss times that they choose friends.

Have children talk about friends they choose and why.

Variation:             I Want To Play by Elizabeth Crary, A Children's Problem Solving Book; or any story about friends; or play The Farmer in the Dell and emphasize that the children are making choices; or sing to the tune of Merrily We Roll Along; "Will you be a friend of mine, friend of mine, friend of mine?  Will you be a friend of mine and walk around a circle."  (One child walks around circle and picks a friend.  They walk together holding hands while the group sings...)  "Yes, I'll be a friend of yours, friend of yours, friend of yours.  Yes, I'll be a friend of yours and walk around the circle."  (Start over and allow the two children to each pick a friend. Continue until everyone has been picked.)
