Success Stories

Language is the Key has been an eye-opener here in the Midwest, helping parents and teachers see that HOW we read with young children is every bit as important as HOW OFTEN we read with them. The simple, user-friendly technique is very powerful in bringing back conversation between adults and children, and picture books are the perfect vehicle for critical language-building in the early years. Language is the Key has not only brought us closer to our children, but consistent use of “CAR Reading” has resulted in impressive gains in early literacy assessment scores!

By the way, we also love the “Supporting Early Literacy in Natural Environments” for infants and toddlers. Thanks!

The Language Is a Key video is a valuable tool to support the early literacy efforts of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.   The video is an integral part of the Library’s Shared Reading and Early Learning Express Programs that teach the dialogic reading method to parents and caregivers of children ages 2-5.

The CAR method explained in the video shows a simple method to get children involved in the story while the adult is the listener and the questioner.  Seeing the adults interact with the children in the video gives parents with lower reading levels confidence that dialogic reading is something they too can do to help increase their child’s vocabulary.  Language is the key, and this video shows parents how they can help their child start school ready to learn.

I was first presented with the Language is Key program at an ASHA convention.  I was so pleased to see information included for the culturally and linguistically diverse populations and immediately saw how valuable this material would be in my work as an early intervention speech-language pathologist.

I have always believed in a family-focused approach to early intervention and Language is Key has been a marvelous tool!  I have used is within clinical visits and home visits.  Often, due to my inability to speak the family’s primary language, your program’s availability in the family’s language created the framework upon which I designed intervention. I have also used it in my work with preschool teachers and other early education staff empowering them to carry out facilitative strategies within the classroom setting. It is extremely user and family friendly and lends itself so well to promoting family involvement with the professional staff.

Thank you so much for your work and efforts!  Please, continue the good work!!

“Language is the Key” has been a most valuable resource for us in Iowa. We understand how important good demonstrations are to quality professional development.  “Language is the Key” uses video to provide multiple looks at effective ways to engage children in conversation. The narration is excellent and appropriate for parents, child care providers, and PK teachers. We use this video for literacy training with Early Care and Education Providers across the state and in our pilot project, Family Learning Time, an opportunity for families to come together to learn about promoting literacy development with their children.
